NYPD Going Undercover as Graffiti Writers — Online?

Screenshot of NYPD visit on Sitemeter (Click for full screen).
The days when undercover cops only sold drugs, sex and guns to catch criminals may be over. It seems they’ve also entered the cheap t-shirt business. If you were thinking of buying a t-shirt commemorating Made U Look’s painting of 10 whole NYC subway cars, you may want to reconsider now. Rumors and suspicions have circulated for a while that the New York City Police Department was behind MadeULookNYC.com, but until we saw a tipster’s screenshots of our very own Sitemeter, the story didn’t have any legs.

Screenshot of source code on MadeULookNYC.com with same Statcounter code as referral address.
The images show multiple visits from the NYPD were referred to Razorapple.com from inside a password protected Statcounter belonging to MadeULookNYC.com. It appears as though the police were carelessly monitoring internet discussions and collecting information for their investigation.
Leary of their address request to send us a free t-shirt, we started asking questions, some of which are included after the jump.
Razor Apple: Are you saying that Made U Look NYC is completely separate from Made U Look?MadeULookNYC.com: As for being separate…u got it.
Razor Apple: From the photos it appears you only wrote “MUL” on the end of the subway car, which you indicated is not your group. If your name is “MULNYC”, why didn’t you write that on the subway instead of another group’s name?
MadeULookNYC.com: I was asked to reply on behalf of the individual you have been chatting with. First, I’d like to personally thank you for extending yourself and assisting in the promotion of this incredible feat. Your Internet coverage has been impressive.
I will be more than happy to answer the questions below without revealing any of my associates identities.
For starters MUL, regardless of a crew name stands for made you look. One of the fine gentleman of our elite team, who’s name and tag I will not personally reveal, had an altercation with MUL back in Chicago during this past summer. This idea of doing a whole train had been looming and planned several months ago. With the assistance of people, who we cannot acknowledge, we were able to gain access and have plenty of time to create this magnificent art peace. It was well funded and many parties were involved. The guys wanted to stick it to MUL by creating the controversy they have done.
Sticking it to a rival by writing their name 750 feet long? This is a ridiculous attempt to explain why the real Made U Look crew would incriminate themselves selling t-shirts after pulling off the biggest subway hit since 1986. We’re not buying it or their t-shirt.
In the end though, IP addresses and referral URLs can be faked, so the screenshots aren’t conclusive. Do you think the NYPD is behind MadeULookNYC.com?

Hah it’s totally cops on that site. Why would the real MUL hide keywords of other graff websites and graff crews at the bottom of their page. It says: “NYC NEW YORK MUL MADE U LOOK MADEULOOK MADEULOOKNYC CHICAGO GRAFFITI TRAINS TRANSIT HIP HOP MADEULOOK.COM GRAFFITI ROBOTS WILL KILL GRAFFITI VIDEOS SASTER.NET STREETS ARE SAYING THINGS VISUALORGASM.COM TAG ALL CITY CREW ACC TAGZ HIP HOP GRAFFITI NYC TAGZ”
